Argumentation Techniques
Reductio ad Absurdum

Disprove opposing arguments by showing their logical conclusions lead to absurd outcomes.

Last updated

What it is

A logical technique that disproves an opponent's argument by showing that it leads to absurd, impossible, or contradictory conclusions. You accept their premise temporarily, follow it to its logical extreme, and demonstrate why the resulting conclusion is unreasonable.

Before & after

Before

That idea is stupid and would never work.

After

If we eliminated all quality control to save money, we'd eventually have 100% returns and zero customers. Clearly, some quality investment is necessary.

When you’ll use it

Budget discussions: "If we cut all training expenses, we'll save money, but then our staff won't know how to use the new systems, leading to expensive mistakes."

Policy debates: "If we allow unlimited remote work, we could save office costs, but if everyone works from home, we'd have no office culture or collaboration."

Resource allocation: "If we hire only junior staff to save salary costs, we'll need senior oversight anyway, negating the savings."

Risk management: "If we eliminate all safety protocols to speed production, we'll face lawsuits that cost more than the protocols."

Pro tip

Take the opposing argument to its extreme logical conclusion to reveal its flaws.
