Last updated
What it is
A grammatical error where a modifying phrase lacks a clear subject to modify, creating ambiguity or unintended meaning because the modifier appears to describe the wrong element in the sentence.
Before & after

After
“Clear subject: "Walking to the meeting, Sarah realized she had forgotten the presentation"”

Meeting notes: Correcting "While discussing budgets, the phone rang" (phones don't discuss budgets)
Performance evaluations: Clarifying "Having completed the training, improvement was expected" (who completed?)
Email communication: Avoiding "By following these steps, success is guaranteed" (who follows the steps?)
