Pitch by Sam Altman
This pitch makes the product easy to understand because you anchor everything in a vivid, relatable demo: seeing nearby friends, getting context, and acting in one tap. The big gap is that it ends like a product announcement, not an investor pitch, so I am left without the few facts needed to evaluate the business.
9 core elements investors expect, plus 4 optional ones (How It Works, Why Now, Vision, Roadmap) that only some pitches need.
Add these only if they fit your pitch.
Hook
We’re incredibly psyched to bring Loopt to the iPhone. Loopt makes it easy to see who you know nearby and what great places are around you, so meeting up can happen in the moment.
Problem
It’s amazing how often you’re at a restaurant a couple blocks away from a friend, or stuck in an airport with an old classmate, and you have no idea. You miss the chance to connect simply because there’s no simple way to know who’s close right now.
Solution
Loopt is about connecting with people on the go, which is the main reason you have a phone. We show you where people are, what they’re doing, and what cool places are around you. We like to say we make serendipity happen.
How It Works
Here’s how it works on the iPhone. On the map, the orange pin is where I am right now, and the blue pins are my friends. You move around the map the way you’d expect by pinching, dragging, and tapping. As we zoom in, we can see friends nearby. When someone is close, we tap their dot and open their profile, like Erin Easter here. From there you can see her journal, photos she’s taken and text she’s entered, all tied to real places and shareable with any other service she’d like. You can also see comments her friends have left. If I tap into an entry like “Back at the cutest little cafe,” I can open the photo and get context fast. And if I want to meet up, I can call or text her right from here, or leave a comment like, “Free for lunch?” If she’s free, I can pull up directions in one click. For developers, that action is also easy to add with our developer toolkit.
Differentiation
This is the best version of Loopt we’ve ever made, and the iPhone is by far the best device we’ve had the opportunity to work with. We’ve developed for nearly every mobile platform out there, and this one is the most powerful. Also, you can use Loopt with your friends on most other mobile phone networks or devices in the US, so it still works even when your friends are not all on the same phone.
Traction
We are the largest social mapping service in the world. [Insert a concrete metric investors can remember, like total users, monthly active users, or growth rate, plus the timeframe.]
Business Model
We’re happy to announce that Loopt will be free on the iPhone. [Not covered in the original pitch. Consider adding who pays you and how, even if the app is free, for example advertising, brand partnerships, premium features, or licensing your platform.]
Team
[Not covered in the original pitch. Consider adding a one-sentence reason this team is uniquely qualified, for example your experience building across nearly every mobile platform and your ability to ship deep iPhone integrations.]
Ask
[Not covered in the original pitch. Consider adding what you want from the audience, for example a funding amount, strategic partnerships, distribution support, or key introductions, and what that would unlock over the next milestone.]
Roadmap
Next is launch in the App Store. [Consider adding what comes immediately after launch, like the next major feature, growth milestone, or partnership focus.]
Vision
We think this is a new era of mobile, where your phone helps you connect to the right people and places in real time. We’re thrilled to be part of it, and we want Loopt to be the way location turns into real-world connection.
