Why does a soap bubble try to be round?

A bubble blown through a square frame does not usually remain a floating cube. Surface tension favors a smaller film area, and a sphere encloses a given volume with the least area. That tidy model works best when gravity, airflow, and draining liquid do not greatly distort the film.
