Why can places at the same latitude have different winters?
Two places can share a latitude without sharing a winter. One may receive air from the ocean while another receives air that has crossed a cold continent. Ocean heat storage, atmospheric circulation, and ocean currents all enter the explanation. A fair comparison also needs matching climate periods and attention to elevation; latitude alone does not set the temperature.
Questions you could explore
- How would you choose two weather stations that make the comparison informative rather than misleading?
- Which parts of this explanation concern typical climate, rather than a forecast of future ocean circulation?
