How did a flight simulator work before digital computers?
A pilot could practice flying by instruments long before a computer rendered a virtual sky. The Link Trainer used controlled air pressure, bellows and moving instruments to respond to the trainee, while a mechanical device traced the imagined route for an instructor. Its value came from recreating selected problems of flight inside a machine that stayed on the ground.
