Can one plant respond to another plant's scent?
A damaged leaf releases chemicals into the air. In experiments with Arabidopsis, exposure to some of those chemicals triggered changes in neighboring plants’ calcium signals and stress-related gene activity. Calling this plant communication is tempting, but the measurable response and the idea of an intentional warning are different claims.
