Can an average happiness curve tell your future?

A graph might show younger, middle-aged, and older respondents reporting different levels of happiness. That does not make the line a personal forecast. The groups contain different people with different histories, measured at one moment. Following the same individuals over time answers a different question, and even their average would not describe every individual future.

How is random sampling different from random assignment?

A study can choose people at random, assign them to groups at random, do both, or do neither. Those choices answer different problems: who the findings may describe, and how fairly the study compares conditions.
